Anyone considering moving from an amateur to a more professional life as a painter.

Set in the heart of Olhao's protected historic area one can find the Olhao Art School. With vaulted ceilings, Roman brick work, three courtyards and an olive tree (believed to be over 150 years old), the school has been restored offering an exceptional space for artistic creativity. The school is surrounded by inspiring subject matter (medieval market towns, rural and urban landscapes, Mediterranean seascapes and harbours) which lends itself to vibrant, light-filled painting and sketching "en plein air". Staying in comfort, and fortified by delicious food and wine (all included in the price), the working day is divided into 2 parts. The mornings are generally filled with formal teaching and escorted painting trips, led by Hugo, whilst the afternoons allow time for optional tutorials with Lisa (brushing up on visual language, Hugo's theory of colour, etc), exploring and painting the intriguing landscape around the art school, or even just relaxing by the pool. There will also be critiques of students' work before dinner on some evenings.

Studio Hugo Grenville's teaching year culminates in an explosion of colour!

Located in the idyllic setting of Olhao Art School students will have access to a range of stimulating subject matter from Mediterranean seascapes, architecture, landscapes as well as life models and still lifes.  Students who have attended previous courses will be guided through further development in one-to-one tutorials. They will be encouraged to reflect on past experiences in order to develop key analytical skills that will allow their work to continue developing long after the end of the course.  Newcomers to Studio Hugo Grenville will be introduced to Hugo's ground breaking 'Theory of Palettes' and be encouraged to grasp the concept of tone before being let loose into the realms of colourism and limitless self expression.

Students will be encouraged to:

• See subject matter in a way that relates to personal experience, and be encouraged to interpret colour in a non-literal way that communicates an expression of inner feeling.
• Develop key drawing/compositional design skills
• Extend experience and knowledge of the potential of art materials through experimentation
• Discuss ideas with tutors and fellow students and take advantage of the available yet highly precious resource that is a sounding board of fellow artists
• Enjoy themselves and be open to new possibilities in their studio practice.
