Practical Details and Information

Artists attending Studio Hugo Grenville’s 2012 Summer School will work in the grounds of the purpose-designed Artist’s retreat at St James’s Farm (click here for directions). The farm is set in 10 acres of pasture, in an area of great tranquillity, far from the noise of roads, and with outreaching views over the Suffolk plateau (click to view images). The house and painting school is about 25 minutes drive from Southwold and the sea.

Our fee covers all studio costs, including the hire of life and portrait models, drawing paper, easels, drawing boards, charcoal, acrylic and poster paints where required, teas, coffees and home cooked lunches. There is a carefully assembled library of relevant art monographs and reference books that students may consult during the working day. It is vital that students consult the list of materials that they are required to bring for every course. This is dispatched 6 weeks prior to the start of the course.

The recommended supplier for art materials is Jackson’s Art Supplies (tel 020 7254 0077) with whom we have negotiated a 10% discount on any materials ordered for our courses. Please mention the discount and Studio Hugo Grenville when you place your order.

To make a booking please return the completed booking form, together with the deposit of half the course fee. Once we have received your application form and cheque deposit we will contact you to confirm your place. We cannot return deposits so we advise travel insurance in case of illness etc. Full payment is due four weeks before the start of the course.

All teaching days start at 9.30am, although the studio opens at 9.00. Punctuality is vital because critical information about both the previous day's teaching, and the day ahead, is usually imparted at the beginning of the class. Teaching finishes at 4.00 (unless otherwise indicated) but students are welcome to work until dusk.

There is generous parking space at St James’s Farm. The nearest train station is Halesworth, which is a 2 ½ hour journey from London Liverpool Street. It is served by National Express East Anglia and is located on the Ipswich-Lowestoft East Suffolk line.

Accommodation: A list of recommended hotels and B&B's is available on request. More information >
