THE ART OF DESIGN: Painting the figure in the context of an interior, Bristol

  • Dates: February 18th - 22nd 2019
  • Location: Stoke Lodge, Bristol
  • Price: £635

Price includes model's fees, parking and tea and coffee. This course is now full.

Course Information

Drawing inspiration from the work of both the Renaissance and modern Masters, students will explore how a painting must first and foremost be a design (or, as Maurice Denis famously suggested: “a flat surface arranged with shapes in a certain order”) before it becomes a story. Beginning with a discussion of the key elements in picture making, including the importance of locating the artist’s idea or vision, we examine how these thoughts can be expressed in the shape of a design, and how the rich and varied language of paint can be used to convey our feelings about the subject.

Using projected slides to illustrate the work of the great painters who tackled these themes, both ancient and modern, we will explore how they used colour, light, line and shape to build up a sense of rhythm and harmony, and what devices they deployed in order to integrate the figure into its interior setting.

We will be working with life models, both clothed and nude, and students will be able to paint both directly in front of the subject, and from their own drawings.

This course will limited to 10 students, and will be held at the delightful late Arts and Craft building of Stoke Lodge which is situated in it’s own grounds in a quiet and beautiful part of Bristol. Each day will begin with a slide show and talk along with tea and coffee. Daily 10am – 4.30pm, Friday 10am – 2pm.
