Course Information
Suitable for all levels including the less experienced.
Duration: 6 days
Taking the work of both the Impressionists and Post Impressionists as inspiration in our morning slide shows, we venture into the landscape and into Hugo’s garden to find our subjects, where students will be introduced to the way colour works. Experimenting with the nuts and bolts of painting, this is a perfect course for oil painters of all levels who wish to further build their awareness and understanding of colour. For after all, colour is like a chord in music: once seen or heard it has the power to affect you emotionally.
We will be looking at the key elements in picture making, including how to create a strong composition and the complex relationships between colour and tonal value. We will also consider the different ways in which a subject can be treated, and how one can express a variety of thoughts, feelings and mood through the medium of oil paint.
The 6 day course will be held at Hugo’s home in West Milton. It is a delightful house, with beautiful gardens and sweeping vistas of of the hilly Dorset countryside. The studio is a spacious marquee where you can further develop your initial sketches and paintings. We will be focusing on painting out of doors in the Dorset landscape, as well as looking at the figure in the landscape. The course is non-residential, but will include delicious homemade lunches and refreshments every day, which are always a highlight!
The teaching part of the day will run daily 10am – 4.30pm but students are welcome to stay on and paint in the landscape at the end of each day.
You will be sent a detailed materials list on booking.
There is also an option to stay an extra 3 days to enjoy free painting time and a critique each morning at 10am with Hugo.
