Teaching ‘Landscape and Colour’ in Suffolk

Last week Hugo was teaching in the glorious Suffolk countryside, with a course titled ‘Landscape and Colour’.

The 4 1/2 day course was held at a delightful country house with beautiful gardens and a newly built studio. Students enjoyed painting ‘en plein air’ in the Suffolk landscape, and by the sea at Felixstowe Ferry.

Hugo discussed the role of colour in expressing feeling and mood, and the importance of subject selection and simplification in endeavouring to achieve an overall sense of unity and design. Students were encouraged to develop a personal response to the landscape, and to find their own voice in expressing their ideas.
