Course Information

WORLD OF COLOUR: Masterclass with Hugo Grenville

Lead by: Hugo Grenville
Assistant Teacher: Angie Porter

Level: This course will suit those who have had experience of painting in oil, acrylic or gouache, and who wish to take their art forward to a higher level.

Medium: Oils, Acrylic, or Gouache

Duration: Six days (five tutored days, and one non tutored painting day)

This course explores the vital relationship between colour and feeling, and explains the way colour works.

Taking the work of the 20th century Masters as inspiration in our morning slideshows, students will be encouraged to liberate colour from its purely descriptive role, and to develop a personal and imaginative response to the subject matter. Over the six day course (an extra day has been added this year as a result of student feedback), we begin to see how the world around us can be first observed, then interpreted and reinvented according to our own mood, our own feelings, so that each student can develop their own voice. Gleaning ideas from the local landscape, and in Hugo’s hilltop garden, we will be experimenting with the raw ingredients of picture making, including how to create a strong composition, and how to consider the complex relationships between colour and tonal value. We will also examine the many different ways in which the medium of paint can be deployed, and students will be encouraged to give time and thought to both what it is they wish to say, and to how they might say it – in other words, the very language of paint. This is a perfect course for oil painters of all levels who wish to further build their awareness and understanding of colour. For after all, colour is like a chord in music: once seen or heard it has the power to affect you emotionally.

The 6 day course will be held at Hugo’s home in West Milton. It is a delightful house, with beautiful gardens and sweeping vistas over the hilly Dorset countryside. The studio is a spacious marquee where students can further develop their initial studies. We will be focusing on painting out of doors in the Dorset landscape, choosing colour palettes which help express our emotions. The course is non-residential, but will include delicious homemade lunches and refreshments every day, which are always a highlight!

The teaching part of the day will run daily from 9.45am – 4.30pm but students are welcome to stay on and paint in the landscape at the end of each day. Students are also welcome to arrive early, with no arrival later than 9:30am.

You will be sent a detailed materials list on booking.
